Georgetown Reflections 2013

Georgetown Reflections:

I want you to think about your time in Georgetown. What were some of the things you really enjoyed? Was there anything about the trip you didn't like? Try and include things that you thought about, felt, smelled, heard, saw, etc. You will use this information to help you plan a Personal Narrative about your time in Georgetown during writing, so the more you can include here, the easier your writing will become. Try and use great word choice, and be as descriptive as possible! Please also be aware of your spelling and grammar. If a word is underlined in red, it is spelled wrong, fix it!

  1. I saw the smoke coming out of the train Georgetown loop rail train. The areas around it were harder to see, it seemed like when the wind blew the smoke just caught a ride with the wind. I saw some silver in Lebanon mine. It was hard to see but it sparkled enough just to make it look like a wink. We sat in there lunchroom, no tables, just benches. I saw the lunch pail on the candle stick holder. The miners were only given 3 candles a day, each candle lasted 3 hours, but you worked 10 hours a day, that would be your day shift. There was a night shift and in order to get out of the mine at night, you could feel which way was out. I also toured the dry room with the old furnace. If you were a powder monkey, it would be your responsibility to keep the furnace warm, otherwise you would get dunked in 32 degree water. Overall, I loved the field trip.

    1. Jen I liked how you described the smoke coming out of the train! I liked the train also but it was not my first time on the train. But I think that I had more fun this time. though one thing I didn't like was the long ride to Georgetown. So that is How the field trip went for me.

  2. My favorite part on the Georgetown field trip was when we toured the silver mine. I liked walking underground and it felt good because it was cold in the mine and it was hot outside. My second favorite part on the Georgetown was leaning new things like, if you disobeyed your parents you got dunked in 33 degrees cold water, another fact is that they hung their lunch tin on a hook in the air. Their lunch had three containers the bottom container held tea or coffee, the middle container held a pastie and, the top container held treats or berries. The tea or coffee was always hot because they putted the tin under a candle that heated the tea that heated up the pastie. When our class went on the train I was feeling great. I love are Georgetown field trip and I think others will too.

    1. I was really interested in their lunch pail too, I would have never been able to think of that. I have the same connection about how good the mine felt. After being in the hot sun all day the mine felt so good. I really loved how you described the lunch pail. Overall, great job Sarah.

    2. I so agree the mine was my favorite part too . I also thought cool the lunch boxes were cool how all the food was separated into different compartments . How the parents would dunk their children into 33 degree if they were bad that's crazy right !

    3. Ya I agree ,don't you think it felt kind of damp in the mine because of the water around us. It also smelled a little like pine because of all the trees. I thought it was kind of cool that the miners had a lunch box that worked. Didn't you think it was cool that they got to carry dynamites. I thought that the heavy box in the second house was really cool.

    4. It would be cool to have one of those lunch boxes. But mine would be blue. And instead of a pasty I would have noodles. And instead of coffee I would have hot cocoa. And an top I would have a cookie. from nicki

  3. Today we were blessed with good weather to go to Georgetown! We rode the georgetown loop that was truly amazing! We rode it to a mine site called Lebanon Mine the mine site was 6 floors high we only got to go on 1 level it was level 3. The first 2 floors were flooded with 33 degree water. It smelled very damp in the mine from all the water. Before we went to the mine we went to the drying room.It had a big ferness in the room one of the powder monkeys jobs another one of the powder mokeys jobs were to fill up the dinomite and empty it into a case. Anyway back to the mine the top 3 floors collapsed so we couldn't toor those levels there was yellow stuff on the wall it looked slimey he said it wasn't he told us to touch it so I did. He finally told us what it was it was snott. In no time at all we were at the lunch room there lunch was in a pale they had coffee and tea to drink. They had pastie and very rarely a sweet and berries. That was our time in Georgetown!

    2. Morgan , I so agree that the mine smelled very damp and don’t you think that water dripping from the ceiling was very cold and the sound of it hitting our hard hats was kinda cool too . I also enjoyed the loop train how we got to see those wonderful views and the amazing river and rock formations !

We eat our snacks excitedly ready to get into the Lebanon Mine . Before we went into the silver mine we went into these two little houses made of wood that was filled with stuff from the 18 hundreds ! The Lebanon Silver Mine was awesome we got to see the miners lunch room and we even got were hard hats ! On the way back I payed a little more to the amazing views the river full of cool rock formations the beeping and smoke of the train and more. I eat my lunch sadly that I would be leaving this wonderful place . I got on the bus sadly thinking that I would be leaving this amazing field trip in Georgetown .

  5. Georgetown

My favorite thing about Georgetown was the Lebanon Mine. I Loved walking in and seeing all the water on the ground. It was so cool when they talked to us about how they used to carry dynamite around. It was also cold to feel the cool air inside the mine. But it felt good after being outside all day. And I thought it was so cool how they came up with that kind of lunch box and how to keep it warm. You had to be pretty smart to live back then. One other thing I thought was cool was the train! Though it was not the first time on the train but it was still great. One thing that I didn't like was all the wasps on the train. But It was a great trip to Georgetown and I hope I can do it again!

  6. When I went to Georgetown I smelled smoke from the train and pine from the trees
I heard blows of the horn that meant to board now or miss the train I also heard the bustle of other kids and teachers and parents telling us where to go.
I felt the breeze and the rocks that were constantly hitting my legs and forearms.
When I got on the train I could only feel the scrape of backpacks hitting my legs and the wind against my face children were screaming and ahhh ing they were pointing and making faces
all I saw was the pine trees and rivers in the valleys below.
When we got of the train we went into two different places before the mines.
One was where they got warm changed clothes and got and warmed dynamite.
The second room was where the managers office was. Ilearned that if you stole you had the right to take that person out back and simply shoot them. Then we got to go into the lebanon mine. The only thing I got to touch was dragons blood and snot. gross right!! The miners weren't able to use hankies or tissues so they literally wiped their noses on the walls of the mine.
Then we went to the lunchroom in the mine. The cool thing is the miners ate out of three layered buckets on the bottom was their tea or coffee on the second layer was the pastie and on the top layer was the treats and\or berries all put in the tin bucket.
Then we went into another room where the pull was made to take silver and coal up through the mine. They said that people were working on the lower levels and that if the giant metal can fell or broke of the rope and you would not be very happy if it fell on you. Then we had to go. That was one heck of a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. I loved every part of Georgetown but I have to say I thought the best part about Georgetown was the Lebanon Mine. There was so many cool things. There was something that they called dragons blood. It was very cool because they said that the dragon protected the silver. And whenever they would see dragons blood they would know that behind the wall that had the dragons blood on it there was a big bundle of silver behind there. There was this stuff on the wall that looked slimy but it wasn’t, after we felt it our tour guide said that it was frozen snot! The miners didn’t have tissues to use so they blew their nose on the wall!! Since there was no electricity back then they used water to make electricity! The miners lunch room was a small part in the mine. After they were done working a shift they would go eat lunch in the lunchroom. They didn’t have lunch boxes like ours, they had these tin cans made of tin. The can only had three layers to put food in. The top layer was for treats and berries. If they were walking to work and saw a berry bush they would put the berries in the top layer. Or if their wife would make them a sweet treat they would put it in the top layer! The second layer was for their pastie. The third layer was for tea or coffee. The cool thing was that they would get three candles each and the candles would only burn for three hours. they would hang their candles from the wall. Then they would hang their lunch boxes over the candle which would keep the tea or coffee warm then the heat from the coffee would go to the pastie to warm up the pastie and the treats wouldn’t get warmed up they were so high up and the candles only produced so much heat. That’s why I thought that the Lebanon Mine was the coolest part in Georgetown!!

  8. When we were in Georgetown the smoke was coming out of the smoke stack it reminded me of a funnel cloud because of how it was smaller at the bottom than at the top I think that was cool. When we were in the Lebanon mine I thought the water was very cold when I touched it and I thought my finger was going to freeze because of how cold it was. I think it was very smart of the workers to make their lunch baskets like they did. I think everybody learned a lot on that trip.

  9. We went to Minnesota and then we went to the Mall of America there was a giant amusement park inside I wanted to do the log chute. First we went to ghost blasters it was AWESOME it was dark and you shoot ghosts don’t do this if you are afraid of ghosts. Second we the log chute you climb up the hill and go racing down you get all wet. then we went on a roller coaster I don’t remember it’s name but we raced around the mall zooming on tracks I almost barfed. Last but probably least we went to Peeps my brother got a bunch of candy. Then we left and just built legos for the rest of the day.

  10. Today we went to the Lebanon Silver Mine and on the Georgetown Loop train. It was very cool with stunning views and amazing rock formations. Probably my favorite part was probably the learning about the ‘dragons blood’ on the wall ,it usually shows up when there is silver nearby. And when we were heading out I found a nail from a support beam lying on the ground! Before we went into the mine we had to put hard hats on.On the train it smelled like soot. the train did not go very fast but it did not take very long to get to the mine. Over all this was probably my favorite field trip of all!

  11. Today at Georgetown we went on the train and the Lebanon Silver Mine. On the train I notest that it was a little cooler in the mountains and it smelled like pine. On the train it smelled like smoke and steam. Before we went into the mine we went in these little building that looked like houses and they had some cool things that the people used in the 1800’s to the1950’s. There were all sorts of things in the mine and one thing I learned is that it takes 100 years for a static mite to grow 1 inch. I also learned that oxygenated copper is blue green and whenever miners found dragons blood it meant that there was silver and they made a giant hall to find it. They left a giant piece of silver behind I just wanted to take a pickaxe and get to it but I couldn't it was blocked off. When we were in the mine it felt kind of damp because of all the water and the coldness. Our tour guide let us touch something but we didn't know what it was then he told us it was snot from the miners. When we were in the mine he told us that the miners hung there lunches over a candle to keep the lunch warm. On the top there was treats or berries then in the middle there is a pastie then on the bottom there is tea. The candle keeps the tea warm and the tea keeps the pastie warm. In the mine we had to wear hard hats just in case of falling rocks because it is a old mine it was used from the 1800’s to the 1950’s so it was active for about 150 years. Whenever the miners had to use the restroom they had to put their hand over the pick nail because if the pick nail was not reflecting light then someones hand was there. I had a lot of fun in Georgetown.

  12. Today I went to Georgetown and rode a real steam train . We were 100 feet above ground.
I wore a hard helmet. The mine wasn't that cold .because I am used to it because I take cold showers. The miners worked 10 hours a day and got 3 candles which burned 3 hours a day. There was minor snot on the wall frozen. I had a lot of fun in Georgetown. I hope I can go again sometime.

  13. We started on a train and then we went to the station and then we walked down and we went into a building where the tour guy told us to go, so we listened to him and then he said that we were going inside the mine when we were finished. So went inside the mine and as we went deeper, and deeper in the mine it got colder, and colder and we were all freezing, but some people were not so cold. Then we went on the train, found a seat and ate lunch while we talked with are friend. When we sat and ate lunch. It did not smell that good. Then we finished our lunch and got off the train and waited, and waited for the buses to come. and they came and we went back to the school and sort of got back to work.

  14. Our trip to Georgetown to was phenomenal. I saw there elk and a ton of different mines on the way up.
When we first got on the train a bee started to swarm james. He shooed him away with his granola bar but accidently threw the bar. and we all started laughing at him But my favorite part was in the mine. And the guy told us that apparently the the kids have a job two they were called powder monkeys we carried dynamite into the mine. I think it would be a scary job.when we were about half way back everyone got kinda bored then then I saw it. A rusty piece of metal I picked it up then I realised originally was hit by a hamer. it was a chisel. and that truly was my favorite time

  15. At Georgetown I saw a lot of things. I went into the Lebanon Mine it was fun. We saw very old hard snot yuk! We also saw a steam pump or something that was made in 18th century. Before we went into the mine we had to put on hard hats in case a rock fell. Lucky for me I do not have to do what the boys have to do. I would most likely be cooking or doing laundry. And if you do not listen you will get dunked in 33 degree water that’s cold. I wonder what it would be like working in in the the mine hard? warm? easy? wet? dry? cold? and that is what I thought about Georgetown.

  16. Today my class and I went to Georgetown! It was very fun! First, are tour guide Mike showed us 3 things before we got to go into the Lebanon Mine,First, we went to the miners Drying Room where I saw a big huge furnace, I smelt smoke, I heard kids asking lots of questions,I got to touch some of the miners clothing . Next, we got to go to the Manager's Office I saw where the Manager sat ,I smelt wood,I heard the birds cawing, I smelt old stuff, I got to touch an old book. Finally, we got to see where they crushed the silver it was a silver house that looked like a porta potty, I saw gold sand around the silver porta potty, I smelt pines, I heard gravel moving on the ground,I got to touch a piece of silver. Now finally I get to finally get to talk about the mine. First,we got to see a big pool of ice water through a big piece of glass it was awesome! Then there was yellowish stuff on the wall. Then we all touched it, it felt like glass. Then we walked a little farther into the mine Mike told us what it was it was SNOT! I freaked out! Then we moved on and saw where the miners ate lunch. We did not get to see Miss. Wyman's favorite part it was their lunchbox there were three layers the first layer was berries or treats, the second layer was a sandwich called a pastie, the third layer was tea. Now we were all done this was one of the best field trips ever!

  17. When I was in the mine the tour guide talked about when they had lunch boxes the lunch box had three layers one layer had treats with berries the second layer has pastie the pastie has crust on the top and bottom and veggies in the middle the bottom layer is tea or coffee. In the cafeteria there is a handle that is over a candle the candle helps keep the tea and the pastie stay warm. The reason why they don’t put their lunch boxes on the floor is because rats can push over your lunch box and eat all the food and you will be really hungry. In the mine it was 30 degrees it felt like a chilly morning when I wake up but colder. Two of the buildings were cool one of the buildings was the drying room there was a furnace to keep them warm and and dry there was dry clothes in there so if they get wet they have extra clothes to change in the room that had the furniss in it is the room that you change in. One of the next rooms is the bosses office it has pictures of men working in the mine without hard helmets the other picture is the town of Georgetown the town does not have a lot of trees the reason why is that they needed to make houses out of the trees there It’s probably about 15 trees left. If you lived back then and you would have to go poop in a box they didn’t have gloves so the men had to pick up the poop bare handed. They didn’t have handkerchiefs or anything to blow your nose so you would have to blow your nose in the wall of the mine. When you touched the snot it was really smooth it kind of felt like a top of a smooth book. When I was in Georgetown I imagined how hard it was back then because they don’t have a lot of things to use or to keep them safe and healthy. If you. When you worked you only could have three candles. In Georgetown I learned a lot of things I didn’t know or I didn’t know about.

  18. On our Georgetown field trip we did fun things, like the train and the mine. First we went on the train from Silver Plume to the mine. Some one that was on the train told us about the stuff that we went by. It was pretty cool. when we got to the mine the tour guide told us some cool stuff about the stuff the people did when they mined for gold and silver and when they did other stuff
But one cool invention they came up with was a lunch box. It was made out of tin and it was like a bucket . It had a lid that could come of easily and it had like a little plate inside that they put like their treats and stuff like maybe berries or veggies. Next they put their meat as they called Pastie. Then they put there hot drink like tea and drank it out of the boll. usually there wife makes there lunch then hangs there lunch and puts a candle under it to heet it . It is a preety cool lunch box.
There was like two little houses that only had one room. We learned some stuff in there to as well. The first little house was the drying room. There was pants and boots and benches all around the room and in the middle of the room was a fireplace or a oven I couldn’t tell and in the next little house it was the like mayor or somethings work place it had a lot of the stuff we do but there were no papers on the floor and the stuff was bigger. But the stamp was huge and I bet it was heavier to.
Before we went in the Mine we put helmets to protect our heads. The helmets were cold just like the Mine. When we went in the Mine it was 40 to 30 degrees. The Mine was just like the Mines on TV they were drippy and and wet. We got to see a real invention that the mayor created, the pulley system. When we got out of the mine, it was so hot. Then we headed back to the train station to get on the train for lunch.

  19. Today my class and I went to Georgetown it was my first time. The trip was fun. My mom went on the trip to. We went to a house it was a office we all went in it was quite small. Then we learned some stuff. Then we went to another house it was the drying room. Then we learned some more stuff. Next we went to the cave we saw very cool things we even touched snot it was gross. Then we got on the train to eat lunch. Then we left.

  20. My small moment is in the Georgetown is when I was on the the train going to the Lebanon Mine, I saw many cool things.First I saw an antelope running up a hillside, It was probably trying to get some food. Then I saw a bear of some sort,it was hiding by a tree, probably trying to hide from predators. After a while we came to the Lebanon mine and got of the train, the Lebanon mine was an adventure of its own but that is another small moment!
