Creating Our Own Precepts - Thanks Mr. Browne

 (Image from: Amazon.com)

Based on our amazing read aloud book Wonder, we are going to channel Auggie's teacher Mr. Browne. We are going to create our own personal precept for the month of October. Mr. Browne defines a precept as "rules about really important things." You can think of them as your words to live by, just like our 'Thought of the Day' everyday in class. Using a research tool in Google Docs, we are each going to pick one precept that best represents us, our words to live by for the month. I want your precept to be something that inspires you to be better this month, and hopefully other students' precepts will inspire you as well. After you have chosen your precept, you will write a paragraph (just like Auggie had to do) explaining what your precept means to you. Your paragraph needs to be correctly formatted (indent, introductions, details, conclusion) and you need to check your writing before you post (aka edit your writing). Make sure to type this in your 'blogging doc' first so you don't lose your work before you are ready to post it.

I want this to be thoughtful, I want this to show me who you are, and I want this to show me what is important to you. Channel Auggie and what he wrote about, thought about, I can't wait to read your precepts!

  1. “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference” - Reinhold Niebuhr

This precept means to me that you can’t change everything and you need the wisdom to know how and to know the difference between changing something or not. I think that many people still need the wisdom to know whether or not to change things that don’t need to be changed. I believe that there is only one thing that needs to changed now and that is the thoughts of others. I mean that people should be grateful for what they have and not think that something needs to be changed when it doesn’t. It doesn’t need to be like that. Many people still need the courage to change things that need to be changed the serenity to not change things and most of all the wisdom to know the big difference.

  2. “Life is nothing without friendship” - Cicero

The precept “ Life is nothing without friendship” means you could never live without friends! As an example if I did not have friends I would not be living this wonderful life!!! You are always wrapped around with wonderful people , friends. You know you have a friend when the person is nice, caring, helpful, and AWESOME. This was my precept about friendship.

    6. Just knowing how much better your life is without friends. More people would want to live their only life with friends then without friends. Having friends makes you a better person. I really like how you described the feeling of having friends.

  3. “Friendship is a single soul living in two bodies. - Aristotle1”

This precept means to me that if you truly have a friendship, it feels like you are siblings. This also means to me that friendship should be very touching. Friendship is like butter on the bread of life, very important to a soul. Friendship could also be lots of words in the book of life. Friendship can be like 2 peas in a pod, just not edible, just touching to the soul, or soul.

“Love means never having to say you're sorry”“As goes love so goes life”

My percept is all about... Love.
Love is a great powerful thing With out love what would the world be like. Don’t think that life is a bad because the next day could be better. Once you say something mean you can never take it back. Love is a great thing to have if you didn’t have love the world wouldn’t be like it is right now with wonderful families.

What my precept means to me is that no one wants to spend there life tied up they always want to spend their life free and running wild. You only want to tell the truth that will be your ticket to freedom. If you follow your soul you will reach for your dreams and your limit of the sky. That means to me to never stop following your dreams and to be the best you possibly can That is what my precept means to me!!!!!

  6. “That validated all the effort I put into this...I wouldn't change a thing” - Loren Baldwin
This means to me that, you put all of your effort and gave it your all. The people in the army, put all the effort they have for their freedom and country. Even if you die you will know that you gave all your effort and that you tried your best. It also means to me that even if you didn't do great you walk out knowing that that you did your best. If in soccer I don’t get a goal or win I know that I at least tried. That’s what this quote means to me.

  7. “It feels good. It was a team effort this whole week” - Tiger Woods.

My sentence means that you worked for something and you feel good about it. One way this means it feels good to do something in the words of the text “it feels good”. Another way it is a good explanation “team effort” means you work together to get something good. The words in the text “it was team effort” you work for it with more people you have to help your team or you won’t win. This saying means to me you can’t get something without effort with your team or you’ll lose

  8. “A real friend is someone who walks in when the rest of the world world walks out”1
This precept means a true friend is someone who is there for you when the rest of the world is not. You can rely on them everywhere you are, they can be there to talk, to cheer you up, talk when you feel alone. This means when the world walks out on you, that true friend walks in. This means to me, if you don’t have a friend to talk to, to cheer you up, rely on that friend to be there if you can’t find another. I have been that friend for others, and others have been that friend for me.

This precept means to me is that a friend is someone that you cannot live without that helps you when you need it. When I was in second grade I was running around with Morgan and Jen she slipped, fell and, cried. Jen’s knees were bleeding and Morgan and I helped her to the clinic.

What this precept means to me. Is if you are grateful to others others will be grateful to you. This is a connection to me because without this rule the world would be a big war seen. Also our whole family tries to use this as much as we can.*

This precept is “ A picture is worth a thousand words.” This means to me that a picture is like a person. Everybody is different you can use more than 100 words to describe somebody. Like every picture is different in a way. Everybody is perfect the way they are, never change. This precept is important to me because when I got a new friend I found out she was not really my friend she wanted me to change and I did really regret it. If I would of followed this precept that would never had happened.

It doesn't matter what other people say it matters what you think like if someone says that you're weird and you think your awesome then that is what matters the most. This precept means to me that it matters what you think not what friends or family think. What matters is what you say or feel about yourself.

    By Nicki

The precept ‘don’t be mean go green” means to me that you do not litter. It will make the earth look like it did in the movie Walli. People, littered ,smoked, and gas was released into the air it made the world so bad nothing could live on Earth. I love the Earth so much that I could never let the Earth look like that .And that is what that precept means to me.

    By: Charles M. Schulz

This quote by Charles M. Schultz tells me that we should always live our life the best we can. It also tells me that hardly anybody dies young so we shouldn't worry about the world ending in 1,000,000,000,000,000 years. This always tells me to keep calm and move on to live a fantastic life that I have been given. And that we should be thankful for a life full of food, water, entertainment, and our families. That is what this quote means to me.

This precept to me means to me that you should always dream and set goals. You never should give give up on them and always try to achieve them and never stop setting goals. And you are never to old to dream and have the best time of your life.I think this because it says “dream a new dream”.

  16. “The most wasted of all days is one without laughter” - E. E. Cummings

What this precept means to me is if someone goes a whole day without laughter they have wasted a day. I think this because laughter is the most important thing in the world. Second, laughter is contagious. If you laugh around a lot of people they will all start laughing. Third, laughter can reinforce positivity. If someone looks like the are having a bad day tell them a joke. They will start laughing and you would have made their day. So I hope you think this quote is as important to you as it is to me.

I feel the same way if you didn’t have friendship who would help you when you get hurt and who would be there when you are alone one more thing who would be the one who cares about you all of that would be your friendship.

  18. “Whatever you are, be a good one” - Abraham Lincoln

The quote that Abraham Lincoln wrote tells me you can chose who you are and you can be who you are but you should always choose or be something good. Like you can get bullied or judged but you still be the right person and the bigger person. Someone could be mean to me but just because I’m mad or sad does not mean I can take my anger on someone else and it can speared. Instead I can just ignore it and go on with my day like nothing happened. - Rylee Frey

  23. “Some people think the whole thing is funny; some think it is scary; and everyone thinks it is gross” - David Steiner

This is how I know what he means…..

I think the guy thought it was funny, scary, and gross because they were probably watching a movie, and something funny happened like, probably someone slipped on a banana and everyone started laughing, and probably something in the movie was scary and that thing was, like killing or something, and probably the movie was gross because, someone probably showed off his alien face and they thought it was really gross because the face might have slime on it.

This is why I chose this one and why I chose this one…

I think things are funny because it makes me laugh. I don’t really like things that are gross because they might be slimy, they might be ugly, and they might be creepy like an alien face. And I sort-of like things that are scary because I like to scare people because it makes me laugh.

Thats why I chose this quote that I did.
